Brilliant Machine
I think this product is fantastic. The performance is outstanding and barely makes a sound. It does not loose suction on carpets, floors or on the staircase.
This is a great alternative to the more expensive DC 24 i was originally considering.

Good suction, terrible, noisy brush
As soon as I took this vacuum out of the box, assembled it, and turned it on, I knew I was going to have trouble. There was a horrendous plastic grinding noise coming from the area of the brush as I began to vacuum. It went away as I continued to vacuum my living room and I thought it must have been "breaking in". After cleaning two rooms and my carpeted stairway I was honestly impressed with the dust, lint, and hair that were collected and I liked the light weight of the vacuum. It's motor was quieter than other vacuums I had owned, too.
What soured me on this vacuum cleaner was when I tried to clean my thick rugs upstairs and this grinding noise continued non-stop. I thought there must be something stuck in the brush but when I examined it, that wasn't the case. It was apparent that there were plastic shavings in the track where the brush spun and I could clearly see that the powerful suction of this vacuum on my rugs was causing the plastic parts of this vacuum to pull against the spinning brush parts. After researching this noise on the internet and reading that many customers had this same problem, I boxed the vacuum and returned it to the store. I do not feel that a $400 vacuum cleaner should perform like this. Overall, I found the Dyson DC14 to be flimsy and its extension wand was awkward to extend and use. I think the suction of this vacuum is exceptional but the construction of the brush, hose, and handle diminish this unit greatly. The grinding and noise are positively unacceptable in a vacuum of this price.
I ended up replacing this with a Hoover canister vacuum that was literally half the price of the Dyson D14 and I am much happier with it. I found the canister's suction to be comparable to the Dyson's while the Hoover is much more durable and easier to use.
Cheap plastic parts break Expensive for breakable plastic. It does pick up dust - until it finds hair, then it jams, and if you don't pull the plug and fix it on time, heats up and the brush melts (about 2-4 seconds, so it's a real problem). Ours only lasted 5 months, and the warranty's only good for selected locations, which is not real convenient.
